The technology-initiative SmartFactory e.V. is a public-private partnership and living lab, which was founded in 2005 by industrial and academic partners on the purpose of supporting the development, application and propagation of innovative industrial plant technologies in different economic branches and to create and operate a demonstration and research testbed for future factory technologies. The SmartFactory acts as “multiplier” making innovations accessible to a broad spectrum of enterprises. Especially the potentials of the permanently improving ICT, which are already deeply affecting our daily lives, are tested for their impact, suitability and usability in industrial applications. The overall goal of the SmartFactoryKL initiative is to create a vendor-neutral research and demonstration testbed where modern ICT (especially simulation and forecasting tools and methods that could strategically support production-related activities during all the phases of the real factory life-cycle) can be examined under realistic conditions.
